Investment Art
Art world investment is a relatively exclusive & small area of monetary and asset exchange that remains at the upper fringes of the global financial system. Investment in art has taken place for many centuries though the formal use of artworks as a form of accepted deposit has been limited to more recent decades withe the works of great artists such as Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.
These artworks can only maintain their assured value so long as a limited number are available on the open world art market. This is one reason dead artist will habitually sell for more than one who is still alive. It is also why prudent live artists produce limited numbers of compositions. The authenticity of such paintings, drawings and sculptures can thus only be verified by a small number of experts in the field or sub-genre of art under review. With contemporary artists it is in the financial interest of art collectors and art dealers to make sure a restricted volume of artworks are produced and taken to the open market.
